Cyclone in the Mentawai Islands, post tsunami 2010.
In 2010, the Mentawai Islands were hit by a 7.7 earthquake, followed by a 4m tsunami, wiping out villages and killing more than 450 people. During the initial aid effort, the channel between mainland sumatra and the islands was shut down due to a cyclone which developed within days of the tsunami. Although we were hundreds of kilometers from the eye of the storm, we got a small taste of what the victims of the tsunami must of been dealing with. This was taken from our resort, with squalls on the hour every hour averaging about 40 knots for a week straight.
